Nokia Acquires Symbian

Nokia now owns more than 99.9 per cent shares of the world's biggest smartphone operating system company


Thursday, December 04, 2008: Nokia has completed the acquisition of Symbian Ltd. Symbian is the software company that develops and licenses Symbian OS, the open operating system for mobile devices. User interfaces designed for Symbian OS include S60 from Nokia, MOAP (S) for the 3G network and UIQ, designed by UIQ Technology, a joint venture between Motorola and Sony Ericsson. Nokia, now, owns more than 99.9 per cent of the total Symbian shares. All Symbian employees are planned to become Nokia employees on 1 February 2009.
